Abstract

CANTHAS (Compact Access Network Haste) is a portable, multi-access radio platform developed to support critical communications in emergency and remote environments. Integrating SRSRAN (formerly srsLTE) as its open-source radio access software, CANTHAS delivers a compact and customizable solution for 4G/5G/Wi-Fi access—designed to be deployed rapidly in the field.

Introduction

In today’s digital era, establishing communication quickly in disaster zones or off-grid areas can be a matter of life and death. Traditional telecom infrastructure is often too heavy, slow to deploy, or reliant on static environments. DENOP introduces CANTHAS, a hardware-agnostic, environmentally friendly, and mobile radio access solution tailored for modern missions—ranging from military to humanitarian aid.

System Overview

CANTHAS is designed to function as a standalone compact radio access unit that supports:

  • 4G LTE and 5G NR with SRSRAN stack
  • Wi-Fi Access Point integration
  • Virtual BBU (Baseband Unit) for rapid deployment and configuration
  • TARA Antenna System for enhanced transmission
  • RENPOWS Power System, a green power solution supporting solar energy

Key Features

All-in-One Platform: Supports 4G, 5G, and Wi-Fi within a single radio access device.

Cloud-Native Deployment: Ready for containerized or virtualized deployments, including Kubernetes environments.

Security-Enabled: Built-in encryption and chip-level ciphering to ensure secure communication.

Interoperable Ecosystem: Seamless integration with DENOP’s PORDEC (data center enclosure) and PANCER (mobile core engine).

Lightweight & Portable: With a compact size of 80 cm, CANTHAS is ideal for transport and fast setup.

Flexible Use Cases:

  • Tactical military communications
  • Disaster response operations
  • Remote island connectivity
  • Temporary or mobile business networks

Integration with SRSRAN

CANTHAS utilizes SRSRAN, a leading open-source 4G/5G RAN platform, for implementing:

  • eNodeB/gNodeB radio base stations
  • EPC/5GC compatibility through software-defined configurations
  • Virtualized radio stack on x86 or ARM-based platforms

This open-source backbone enables CANTHAS to be fully programmable, allowing DENOP and partners to customize performance based on terrain, mission profile, or spectrum availability.

Real-World Impact

The flexibility of CANTHAS provides:

  • Reduced CAPEX and OPEX
  • Autonomous network establishment
  • Increased digital reach in non-served regions

It empowers users from emergency teams to enterprise IT departments with quick-to-deploy mobile telecom capabilities, transforming the way temporary networks are built.

Future Development

🔧 Development Roadmap:

  • Integration with Mesh Networking Protocols
  • AI-based signal optimization & routing
  • Drone-mounted and vehicle-mounted CANTHAS nodes
  • Compliance with OpenRAN architecture for telco-grade deployments
